2018年考研英语难句解析

　　1、If the tradition of ambition is to have vitality, it must be widely shared; and it especially must be highly regarded by people who are themselves admired, the educated not least among them.

　　本句的最大难点是分号的作用，通常分号是分割两句话，但本句中if引导状语从句，主句是分号和and共同连接的并列结构，一个是it must be widely shared ，一个是it especially must be highly regarded by people ，people后面是who引导的定语从句。结尾处among them表明后面是其中的一类人，the educated 是表示一类人，not least前面省略了谓语动词is。is to have在此处具有强调的意思，可以译成“就是”。
