Paris is the city of dreams; the city of love. If you are thinking of heading to Paris for a study period, then perhaps a little reality check is in order. But my experience was a romantic one.
I paved my path to Paris through an exchange program. On arrival in Paris, I was constantly reminded of the official processes I was required to complete — forms to be filled in, meetings to attend, the list seemed endless. Perhaps it was due to my well organizational habit, but somehow this endless list of to-do s was completed in little more than a week.
Then the real work began. Once classes were underway, I found myself volunteering to do oral presentations and assignments first, rather than last. This method turned out to be very helpful.
Once I had finished class for the week, I had an ever-increasing list of museums to visit, neighborhoods to explore, cafés to sit in, and parks to run around. Read as many books about Paris as you can. Talk to as many locals and other foreigners living there as you can. The one thing that reading a book or talking to someone cannot do is to provide you with the experience of wandering Paris on foot. I discovered some of my favorite places in Paris by wandering. The people watching, the sounds of the city, the colors as the seasons change, they all add to the ecstasy that is experiencing Paris as an exchange student.
After spending five months wandering through the charming neighborhoods, I fell in love with the atmosphere that came out from every open door, and with every spoken word. There is something comforting about walking to the market each Sunday to be faced with the beautiful display of fruits, vegetables and dairy products. There is warmth in saying bonjour to the man across the hall.
On my last day in Paris, I confidently said, “Bonjour Monsieur,” as I passed the little store down the street. I guess no matter how hard I tried I was always going to be an outsider, a tourist. The best part about going on exchange in Paris is falling in love with the city in your own unique way. Everyone s experience of Paris is different. I know mine is unique and special to me, my own little pieces of Paris.
1.What does the passage mainly tell us
A. The special working experience in Paris.
B. The charming neighborhoods in Paris.
C. Living abroad in Paris as a student.
D. The stressful study life in Paris.
2.What does the underlined word “ecstasy” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Happiness. B. Imagination.
C. Courage. D. Reputation.
3.Beyond reading books, which experience would the author treasure most
A. Enjoying a cup of coffee in his spare time.
B. Greeting people in French in the street.
C. Buying vegetables in the market.
D. Wandering in Paris on foot.
4.According to the passage, what left the author the deepest impression
A. The steps he went through before the exchange program.
B. The presentations and assignments he did in class.
C. The academic achievement he made in his study.
D. The special culture he experienced in the city.
The Lumière Brothers had their film shows, taken over 100 years ago, to 100 paying customers on December 8, 1985. One of their earliest films was a 30-second piece which showed a section of a railway platform. As the train approached, panic started in the theatre: people jumped and ran away. In their confusion, the audiences feared that a real train was about to crush them. That was the moment when cinema was born.
Early cinema audiences often experienced the same confusion. In time, the idea of films became familiar, the magic was accepted — but it never stopped being magic. Film has never lost its unique power to embrace its audience and transport them to a different world.
One effect of this realism was to educate the world about itself. Cinema makes the world smaller. Long before people travelled to America or anywhere else, they knew what other places looked like and how other people worked and lived. Undoubtedly, in the lives recorded in film people knew more about American life. Hollywood has dominated the world film market. American imagery — the cars, the cities, the cowboys became the primary imagery of film. Film carried American life and values around the globe.
And, thanks to film, future generations will know the 20th century more familiarly than any other period. We can only imagine what life was like in the 14th century or in classical Rome. But the life of the modern world has been recorded on films. We shall be known better than any preceding generations.
The “star” was another natural consequence of cinema. The cinema star was effectively born in 1910. Because everybody in the world seems to know who they are, they appear more real to us than we do ourselves. The star as magnified human self is one of cinema s most strange and enduring legacies(遗产).
Cinema films originally were planned as short stories, because early producers doubted the ability of audiences to concentrate for more than the length of a reel. Then, in 1912, an Italian 2-hour film was hugely successful, and Hollywood settled upon the novel-length narrative that remains the dominant cinematic convention of today.
And it has all happened so quickly. Almost unbelievably, it is only 100 years since that train arrived and the audience screamed and fled, perhaps, suddenly aware that the world could never be the same again — that, maybe, it could be better, brighter, more astonishing and more real than reality.
1.The writer refers to the film of the train in order to show_______.
A. the effect of early films
B. the simplicity of early films
C. the short length of early films
D. the vivid imagination of early films
2.When cinema first began, people thought that_______
A. its future was uncertain
B. it would always tell stories
C. it should be used in fairgrounds
D. the audiences were unappreciative
3.What is the main idea of the Paragraph 3
A. How fast cinema has changed.
B. How attractive the film actors are.
C. How cinema comes to focus on stories.
D. How cinema teaches us about other cultures.
4.What is the best title for this passage
A. The Comparison Between Cinema and Novels.
B. The Domination of Hollywood.
C. The Rise of the Cinema Stars.
D. The Power of the Big Screen.
The Truth About the Environment
For many environmentalists, the world seems to be getting worse. They have developed a hit-list of our main fears: that natural resources are running out, that the population is ever growing, leaving less and less to eat, that species are becoming disappeared in huge numbers, and that the planet s air and water are becoming ever more polluted.
But a quick look at the facts shows a different picture. First, energy and other natural resources have become more abundant, not less so. Second, more food is now produced per head of the world s population than at any time in history. Fewer people are starving. Third, although species are indeed becoming disappeared, only about 0.7% of them are dying out in the next 50 years, not 25-50%, as has so often been predicted. And finally, most forms of environmental pollution either appear to have been best cured not by limiting economic growth, but by accelerating it.
Yet public opinion surveys suggest that many people hold the belief that environmental standards are declining and four factors seem to cause this gap between what they know and what the reality is.
One is the unbalanced budget for scientific research. Scientific funding goes mainly to areas with many problems. That may be wise policy, but it will also create an impression that many more potential problems exist than is the case.
Secondly, environmental groups need to be noticed by the mass media. They also need to keep the money rolling in. Understandably, perhaps, they sometimes overstate their arguments. In 1997, for example, the World Wide Fund for Nature issued a press release entitled: Two thirds of the world s forests lost forever . The truth turns out to be nearer 20%.
A third source of confusion is the attitude of the media. People are extremely more curious about bad news than good. Newspapers and broadcasters are there to provide what the public wants: That, however, can lead to significant misunderstanding. An example was that America came across EI Nino(厄尔尼诺) in 1997 and 1998. This climatic phenomenon was accused of breaking tourism, causing allergies, melting the ski-slopes, and causing 22 deaths. However, according to an article in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, the damage was estimated at $4 billion but the benefits amounted to some $19 billion.
The fourth factor is poor individual knowledge. People worry that the endless rise in the amount of things everyone throws away will cause the world to run out of places to dispose of waste. Yet, even if America s trash output continues to rise as it has done in the past, and even if the American population doubles by 2100, all the rubbish America produces through the entire 21st century will still take up only one 12,000th of the area of the entire United States.
It is extremely important that we look at the facts if we want to make the best possible decisions for the future. It may be costly to be overly optimistic, but more costly still to be too pessimistic.
1.What aspect of scientific research does the writer express concern about in Paragraph 4
A. The need to produce results.
B. The lack of financial support.
C. The selection of areas to research.
D. The desire to solve every research problem.
2.The writer suggests that newspapers and broadcasters are intended to_______.
A. educate readers B. meet readers expectations
C. mislead readers D. encourage readers feedback
3.What does the writer say about America s waste problem
A. It will increase in line with population growth.
B. It is not as serious as we have been led to believe.
C. It is only effective in certain areas of the country.
D. It has been reduced through public awareness of the facts.
4.What is the author s attitude to the truth about the global environment
A. Unconcerned. B. Optimistic.
C. Objective. D. Puzzled.

How to Treat Hoarding Disorder(囤积症)
Many of us struggle to part with treasured belongings, but for years Stephanie Evans felt too hard to leave everything she d ever bought. 1. Her bedroom, meanwhile, was so full of piles of clothes that, until recently, she had to sleep on the sofa in the living room.
Stephanie suffers from hoarding disorder, thought to affect an estimated 3.4 million people in the UK to some degree. But, like many, she didn t think it was something doctors would treat. 2. In fact, hoarding is recognized as a psychiatric disorder(精神疾病) by the World Health Organization. It can be associated with other mental health conditions such as depression and social anxiety, etc. Those affected people will collect anything, such as clothes, newspapers, photos, even printouts of emails.
3. If a person lost something important in the childhood, he or she would resist any further losses. That s why hoarders refuse to part with things. Hoarding can have far-reaching effects on a person s life. People can lose their children and their homes due to hoarding.
Hoarding disorder, like many other illnesses, can never really be “cured”. 4. Clearing out someone s overcrowded house is rarely effective on its own, because he or she will just fill it up again. If and when hoarding disorder is diagnosed, the mental health professional, the patient s primary care physician, and any specialists or other professionals involved will work together to develop a coordinated treatment. For most people with hoarding disorder, cognitive behavioral therapy(认知行为治疗) with a mental health professional is the first choice treatment. It can often help the hoarders accept that there is a problem, and then possibly develop solutions.
Because hoarding disorder is still relatively new as a distinct condition, treatment plans may be somewhat less standardized. For instance, there is still disagreement regarding if and how to use medicine to treat hoarding disorder. 5.
A.So she didn t seek any help.
B.Hoarders may also have problems planning and organizing.
C.However, it can be successfully treated with the right mix of treatment methods.
D.The common time for it to come is when people are middle-aged or older and living alone.
E.Hopefully, some people with the condition do seem to respond well to certain kind of medicine.
F.As a result, her hallway and living room were packed with towering stacks of books and magazines.
G.One theory is that having experienced loss in the past can make people suffer from hoarding disorder.

If it had not been for Fan Jinshi and her team, the world cultural heritage at Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes in a remote Chinese desert might have long been destroyed by sand, weather or humans.
Born and raised in Shanghai, Fan has spent half a century fighting an uphill battle to preserve the ancient Buddhist wall painting at Dunhuang, in Northwest China’s Gansu Province. The 1,651-year-old Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes are a huge collection of Buddhist art—more than 2,000 buddha figures and 45,000 square meters of paintings spread among 735 caves. It is China’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Archaeologist Fan was sent to Dunhuang after graduation from Peking University in 1963.While in Dunhuang, a remote village in the desert then, Fan lived in an abandoned temple. At first, she did not even dare to go out to the toilet at night. To protect the treasures from sand and dampness, Fan and other workers put doors on the caves, planted trees and started monitoring temperature and humidity in the caves. They also controlled the number of visitors.
In the late 1990s, with tourism booming nationwide since national holidays were extended, the local government planned to go public with Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes, but found Fan firmly in their way.“The heritage would have been destroyed if it had been listed,” she said.
Dunhuang Academy has now photographed and cataloged online all the sculptures and paintings.“Despite our efforts to minimize damage, we can’t completely stop them from being eroded. But the digital database will last.”
Fan was grateful when her husband joined her in Dunhuang in 1986 after 19 years of separation. Her two sons grew up in Shanghai with their aunt.? “I have not been a good mother or wife. With regard to my family, I’m full of guilt,” she said.Fan, 79, retired two years ago as the director of Dunhuang Academy but continues her efforts as a national political adviser.
1.Which of the following measures didn’t Fan Jinshi take to protect Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes?

B.Planting trees and stopping the Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes being eroded.
C.Picturing and classifying all the sculptures and paintings online.
D.Putting doors on the caves and monitoring temperature and humidity.
2.When was Fan separated from her husband?
A.In 1963. B.In 1967.
C.In 1986. D.In the late 1990s.
3.The phrase “in their way” in Paragraph 4 means ________.
A.Go to a place. B.Be in favor of something.
C.Reject something. D.Give in to something.

For high school leavers starting out in the working world, it is very important to learn particular skills and practise how to behave in an interview or how to find all internship(实习).In some countries, schools have programs to help students onto the path to work.In the United States, however, such programs are still few and far between.
Research shows that if high schools provide career-related courses, students are likely to get higher earnings in later years. The students are more likely to stay in school, graduate and go on to higher education.
In Germany, students as young as 13 and 14 are expected to do internships.German companies work with schools to make sure that young people get the education they need for future employment.
But in America, education reform programs focus on how well students do in exams instead of bringing them into contact with the working world.Harvard Education school professor Robert Schwartz has criticized education reformers for trying to place all graduates directly on the four-year college track.Schwartz argued that this approach leaves the country’s most vulnerable(易受影响的) kids with no jobs and no skills.
Schwartz believed that the best career programs encourage kids to go for higher education while also teaching them valuable practical skills at high school.James Madison High School in New York, for example, encourages students to choose classes on career-based courses. The school then helps them gain on-the-job experience in those fields while they’re still at high school.
However, even for teens whose schools encourage them to connect with work, the job market is daunting. In the US,unemployment rates for 16-to-l9-year-olds are above 20 percent for the third summer in a row.
“The risk is that if teenagers miss out on the summer job experience, they become part of this generation of teens who had trouble in landing a job,” said Michael, a researcher in the US.

A linguist is always listening, never off-duty.I invited a group of friends round to my house, telling them that I was going to record their speech.I said I was interested in their regional accents, and that it would take only a few minutes. Thus one evening, three people turned up at my house and were shown into my front room. When they saw the room they were a bit anxious, for there was a microphone at head height, with wires leading to a tape-recorder in the middle of the floor. They sat down, rather nervously, and I explained that all I wanted was for them to count from 1 to 20.Then we could relax and have a drink.I turned on the tape-recorder and each in turn counted seriously from 1 to 20 in their best accents. When it was over, I turned the tape-recorder off and brought round the drinks. The rest of the evening was spent in total relaxation.I joined them in talking and joking freely, leaving them only to take a telephone call, which lasted some time.
As a matter of fact, the microphones were not connected to the tape-recorder in the middle of the room at all but to another one in the kitchen. My friends, having seen the visible tape-recorder turned off, paid no more attention to the microphone which stayed in front of their chairs, only a few inches from their mouths, thus giving excellent sound quality. And my long absence meant that I was able to get as natural a piece of conversation as it would be possible to findI should add, perhaps, that I did tell my friends what had happened to them, after the recording was over, and asked them whether it should be destroyed.None of them wanted to—but for some years after that, it always seemed that when it came to buying drinks, it was I who paid for them.Linguistic research can be a very expensive business.

I grew to be a tall girl but I tried to be as ordinary as possible. At school, I always chose a seat in the back of the room, and never raised my hand in class. When I was 16, I went to my new school. And I liked the English teacher. In my last year in high school, however, we were told that a new English teacher, Oliver Bascom, was going to teach us.
Oliver Bascom! The girls laughed as we imagined a short and bald(秃头的)man. The situation was not funny, because this man would teach us for the whole year. Surprisingly, after we opened the door, there in front of the blackboard, we saw a young and handsome man!
What followed was chaos, seventeen-year-old girls flying to get to seats in the front of the room. And I managed to get a front and center desk.
I really wanted to make a good impression on my new teacher, but I usually kept quiet. The day that directions were given for our first major writing assignment, I arrived late to class. A friend later gave me the guidelines and I thought I understood them. I worked the whole weekend on the essay and waited nervously for Mr. Bascom’s evaluation.
After three days, he arrived in class holding the corrected papers. “I’ve chosen the ten best essays for class discussion.” he said.
Twenty minutes later, my heart sank when he got to the last essay, and I didn’t hear my name.
“These are all great essays,” Mr. Bascom continued. “However, I am now going to read you the most successful of all…” We were all surprised as I was the author of this unusual work. A different girl walked out of the classroom that day. I knew that I had a new set of standards to live up to and that anything was possible in the future. Finally, I raised my head.

A recent experiment proves that bees can save time and energy when they fly around to different flowers.
Dr Nigel Raine, from the Royal Holloway University of London, has always been interested in finding out why animal behave like they do. He is also interested in bees. It was not a surprise when he and some other scientists from Queen Mary University of London discovered that bees can quickly solve a problem that takes computers many days.
Flowers make pollen (花粉), and when bees visit them, they carry the pollen to other flowers. The plants need the pollen to make seeds that will grow. Dr Raine notes that we get a lot of our food from plants, so it is important to know how the bees move around and take the pollen between flowers. The scientists wanted to examine the journey that the bees take and how they save energy when they do this. They completed the experiment on the roof of Queen Mary University, using artificial flowers and a large amount of nectar, a sweet liquid produced by flowers. They taught one bee to visit all the flowers in one place at the same time. When the bee got to know the location of the flowers well, they saw how it flew around and returned home with the nectar. After this, they changed the locations of the flowers. The scientists thought the bee would follow the route it knew already. This would mean that it followed a longer route than it needed to, and so it would use more energy. They watched the bee carefully as it travelled between the flowers in their new location, and they made notes. But in the experiment, the bee changed its route and flew a shorter distance.
The problem that the bee solved is similar to a maths puzzle called the ‘travelling salesman problem’. A salesman who goes to different places to sell things wants to travel the shortest distance. But he has to calculate the length of many possible routes to know which one is the shortest. A computer can calculate this but the experiment shows bees can do the same calculation quickly with a tiny brain. Scientists are very interested in how they do this. It would help us to understand how pollen is moved around. In addition, if they find this out, it could help us to improve communication networks. This might help humans to reduce traffic jams when there is an accident, for example.

A. pollen is moved around
B. traffic jams can be reduced
C. bees can calculate so quickly
D. communication networks are improved
4.Where does this passage probably come from?
A. A novel.B. A website.
C. A science magazine.D. An advertisement.
Play time is in short supply for young children these days and the lifelong consequences for developing children can be more serious than many people realize.
An article in the most recent issue of the American Journal of Play details not only how much children’s play time has declined, but how this lack of play affects emotional development, leading to the rise of anxiety, depression, and problems of attention and self control. “Since about 1955, children’s free play has been continually declining, at least partly because adults have applied ever-increasing control over children’s activities.” says the author Peter Gray, Ph. D, Professor of Psychology at Boston College.
We can describe the unstructured freely-chosen play as a testing ground for life. It provides critical life experiences without which young children cannot develop into confident and competent adults. So kids need more of it, not less. Because play is how young children learn important social and emotional skills such as sharing, cooperating, communicating, and empathizing. It helps them develop fit bodies, strong minds, and brave hearts, so they can take on new challenges and risky situations.
Gray’s article is meant to serve as a wake-up call regarding the effects of lost play. We must know that lack of childhood free play time is a huge loss that must be paid attention to for the sake of our children and society. But parents who keep a lookout over and disturb their children’s play are a big part of the problem. It is hard to find groups of children outdoors at all, and, if you do find them, they are likely to be wearing school uniforms and following the directions of coaches while their parents dutifully watch and cheer.
Actually, when children are in charge of their own play, it provides a foundation for their future mental health as older children and adults. Play gives children a chance to find and develop a connection to their own self-identified and self-guided interest. It is through play that children first learn to make decisions, solve problems, improve self-control, and follow rules. Play helps children make friends and learn to get along with each other as equals. Most importantly, play is a source of happiness.
When parents realize the major role that free play can take in the development of emotionally healthy children and adults, they may wish to reassess the priorities ruling their children’s lives. The needs for childcare, academic and athletic success and children’s safety is important. But perhaps parents can begin to identify small changes——such as openings in the schedule, backing off from quite so many supervised (有监督的) activities, and possibly slightly less keeping watch on the playground that would start the slow returning to the direction of free, imaginative-directed play.
1.What do we know from the first two paragraphs?
A. The rise of children’s anxiety is more serious than people realize.
B. Lack of play time leads to kids’ unhealthy emotional development.
C. More young children are suffering from depression due to free play.
D. Playing too much leads to problems of kids’ attention and self control.
2.According to Peter Gray, unstructured freely-chosen play _______ .
A. is full of challenges and risky situations
B. should be balanced with adult-directed activities
C. does harm to children’s confidence and competence
D. has good effect on children’s social and emotional skills
3.The article is intended for ____________.
A. parentsB. teachers
C. coachesD. children
4.Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. Do Children Need More Self-guided Play?
B. Are Children Interested in Guided Play?
C. Can Children Guide Themselves?
D. Are Children’s Problems Serious?

Does Using Technology in the Classroom Help College Students?
Almost anywhere in the world, you are likely to find people doing the same thing in public places, on trains and buses or wherever else you look. They spend their day looking at laptop computers, smartphones or other personal electronic devices. They are thinking mainly about their electronic devices, and not much else.
1_____. More and more college students have no problem walking into a classroom and immediately opening their laptops. Others may spend an entire study period with a smartphone in hand. 2._____ But recent research suggests that using technology during class time may harm college students’ ability to remember and process the subject material they are learning.
Arnold Glass, a professor in Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and a student researcher investigated the issue of divided student attention. During half of their daily class periods, the students in their study were permitted to use any electronic device as much as they wanted. 3._____
The students’ academic performance was measured in several ways throughout the semester. They took a short test every day, longer tests every few weeks and a final exam covering all the class material. The researchers found that the average daily quiz results showed no evidence of harmful effects from the use of technology. 4._____ They showed that all the students performed poorly on questions covering material taught on days when they were permitted to use technology in the classroom.
Glass says that it shows the use of electronic devices in the classroom prevents students from processing information. The students hear what the professor is saying. But they might be buying things online or reading unrelated emails at the same time, for example. So they are not thinking deeply about the subject matter as they are hearing it. 5._____
A. The same can be said about the world of college education.
B. However, the average results of the larger tests and final exam told a different story.
C. And that, Glass says, makes it harder for the information to enter their long-term memory.
D. Technology, in general, is not the only way that students find to distract themselves in class.
E. But even if technology is helpful to some students, there are times when it needs to be turned off.
F. Some students argue that the increasing use of technology can have many helpful effects on society.
G. During the other half, researchers closely watched them to make sure no one was using any technology.
