  英文简历是使用英文写的简历。英文简历(resume)并无固定不变的单一形式,应聘者完全可以根据个人的具体情况来确定采用何种形式,灵活设计。

  最常使用的英文文件字体:Times New Roman

  电脑字型早已大众化。不必特别购买,每台电脑都有好多字型,足够提供一般用途使用,例如製作简单的个人履历、投影片或报告等。但是,字型背后的知识却没有如此普及。大众字型学(popular typography)系列文章,就是要为每个用字的人介绍使用字型的基本知识。

  首先,我们从英文开始。最主要的原因是每台电脑都有许多英文系统字型,可以说是人人唾手可得,因此也成为练习排版的基本素材。另一个原因是,字型学理论目前以欧文文字较为完整。也因此,就先从英文开始展示字型学基本知识。

  在第一篇文章中,我们先谈谈英文履历表(或者,英文报告、英文简报)要用哪套字型比较好?

  正文开始。您想先听简单的答案还是复杂的答案?

  先从简单的答案说起吧。用于内文,电脑里除了 Times New Roman 以外, 可能还有 Adobe Garamond(或其他Garamond), Adobe Caslon(或其他Caslon), Baskerville, Centaur, Lucida Bright, Palatino, Goudy, Hoefler text, Lucida Sans, Gill Sans, Franklin Gothic 等名牌、高品质英文字体,无衬线与衬线字不一而足。

  使用hoefler text,美国纽约知名字体设计公司H&FJ出品。

  使用Palatino,有古典质感笔划与现代样式(modern style)骨架的字体。

  使用Garamond,阅读性能极高的旧风格(Old style)字体。

  OK,简单的部份讲完了,这些就是大部分电脑裡都内建的高品质系统英文字体,其实满好看的履历表字型(需要快速答案的朋友可以先离开了XD)。

  但要是字型学只是一门选字的学问那该有多好!选字就已经够烦恼了,但字型学要处理的议题还更多。

  复杂的答案

  选对履历表字型来说有这麽重要吗?

  有个在金融投银圈的学妹谈到,投给外商银行的履历表,使用 Times New Roman 就对了。这是一个相当有趣的观察。诚然,许多国际学术研讨会官方指定用字型也是这套字型。可能是因为 Times New Roman 非常普及,不分品牌,几乎每台电脑裡都会内建,所以不会造成会议手册编辑人员的困扰;另一方面是因为 Times New Roman 的外表符合需要。

  Times New Roman 诞生于 1930 年,是当时英国泰晤士报採用的「新」字体。现在电脑中使用的 Times New Roman可能是由微软自行生产或 Linotype 公司为麦金塔系统复刻的版本。这款字体是追溯罗马时期最早的字母型态设计的,代表某种西方文化的正统美感与价值。

  这个字体具有手写感的重心线(axis)。所谓重心线就像下面图示。人的书写与阅读重力方向都是从左上到右下,符合这种重心设计的字一般来说都有人文特徵 (humanist),手写产生的自然线条与重心会导引视线穿梭于字裡行间,使阅读较为舒适。

  Times New Roman 的重心线(axis):从左上到右下,符合阅读时的「视觉重力方向」;在造型上也有巴洛克与新古典主义字体的风格痕迹。

  但是 Times New Roman 却没有手写的质朴与个性变化。它的线条是笔直、理性而可预测的;字体的粗细比例设计也回溯巴洛克时代的庄重,而在笔划收尾这种影响字体风格甚重的地方,却又融汇 18 世纪新古典主义的精致尖端。

  从这个字体的历史来看,它原本是设计给报纸内文使用,所以要兼顾长时间阅读的舒适性,所以採用了具有手写感的重心;而身为英国最权威的报纸,文字的风格必须有英国的精致、庄重、典雅,要有时代感,又要中性、公正。Times New Roman 的视觉型态恰好符合这种联想,也迎合了它的用途。

  字型是版面最基本的元素,当然重要。回溯 Times New Roman 的.设计,正好可以验证字型对于设计的影响。而学妹会呼吁大家在投银履历表上使用该字体也有其道理。除了好读以外,或许金融圈的工作必须要理性、准确、可预测而庄重,而这与 Times New Roman 有一定的视觉联想吧。

  选字:合宜的视觉联想与机能

  但是如果今天沟通的对象不是外商银行,而是设计工作室呢?如果不是那麽极端的话,那也可能是管理顾问、广告公司、新创科技公司……不一而足;这种时候要怎麽办?或许还是用 Times New Roman 一招闯天下?

  虽然 Times New Roman 有它的经典性,但在欧美地区 Times New Roman 已经成为某种无趣的代表--庄重、典雅、中性的英国老伯伯,没有个性。又或许是因为这套字型根本过于普及,若不考虑情境而随意使用,会被认为是「随便挑了一套安全字体来用」,毫无设计感可言。

  这种时候我们就返朴归真,想想设计这份文件的目的到底是什麽。思考过程也没有这麽玄,其实就是老生常谈:思考要与谁沟通,与沟通的目的是什麽:是要表现自己是个什麽样的人吗?其实这也是履历表要解决的问题之一:与对方说明自己是什麽样的人。而字体的视觉联想(感觉、个性)可以帮助自己说明这个问题。

  从工作的角度来说,我是什麽样的人?我想成为什麽样的人?可以藉由哪种工作达成这个愿望?

  我都听什麽音乐?

  这些问题可以帮助了解自己的具体个性,所得到的结果再套用于对字体视觉型态的理解上,选出「最像自己的字体」。
