o say that the child learns by imitation and thatthe way to teach is to set a good exampleoversimplifies. No child imitates every action he sees. Sometimes, the example the parent wants him tofollow is ignored while he takes over contrarypatterns from some other example. Therefore wemust tum to a more subtle theory than "Monkey see. monkey do".
Look at it from the child's point of view. Here he is in a new situation, lacking a ready response. He is seeking a response which will gain certain ends.If he lacks a ready response for thesituation, and cannot reason out what to do.he observes a model who seems able to get theright result. The child looks for an authority or expert who can show what to do.
There is a second element at work in this situation. The child may be able to attain hisimmediate goal only io find that his method brings criticism from people who observe him. When shouting across the house achieves his immediate end of delivering a message. be istold emphatically that such a racket (叫嚷) is unpleasant, that he should walk into the nextroom and say his say quietly. Thus. the desire to solve any objective situation is overlaid withthe desire to solve it properly. One of the early things the child leamsis that he gets moreaffection and approval when his parents like his response. Then other adults award someactions and criticize others. If one is to maintain the support of others and his own self-respect, he must adopt responses his social group approves.
In finding trial responses. the learner does not choose models at random. He imitates theperson who seemsa good person to be like. rather than a person whose social status hewished to avoid. If the pupil wants to be good violinist, he will observe and try to copy thetechniques of capable players;while some other person may most influence his approach tobooks.
Admiration of one quality often leads us to admire a person as a whole. and he becomes anidentifying figure. We use some people as models over a wide range of situations. imitatingmuch that they do. We leam that they are dependable and rewarding models becauseimitating them leads to success.

It is all very well to blame traffic jams, the cost of petrol and the quick pace of modern life, but mannerson the roads are becoming horrible.Everybody knows that the nicest men become monsters behind the wheel.Itis all very well, again,to have a tiger in the tank, but to have one in the driver's seat is another matter altogether. You might tolerate the odd road-hog,the rude and inconsiderate driver, but nowadays the well-mannered motorist is the exception to the rule.Perhaps the situation calls for a "Be Kind to Other Drivers"campaign, otherwise it may get completely out of hand.
Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense too.It takes the most cool-headed and good-tempered of drivers to resist the temptation to revenge when subjected to uncivilized behavior. On the other hand,a little politeness goes a long way towards relieving the tensions of motoring.A friendly nod or a wave of acknowledgement in response to an act of politeness when they see it.
However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous.Typical examples are the driver who brakes violently toallow a car to emerge from a side street at some hazard to following traffic, when a few seconds later the road would be clear anyway;or the man who waves a child across a zebra crossing into the path of oncoming vehicles that may be unable to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they care to.It always amazes me that the highways are not covered with the dead bodiesof these grannies.
A veteran driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if motorists learnt to filter correctlyinto traffic streams one at a time without causing the total blockages that give rise to bad temper.Unfortunately, modern motorists can't even learn to drive, let alone master the subtler aspects of roadsmanship.Years age the experts warned us that the car-ownership explosion would demand a lot more give-and-take from all road users. It is high fime for all of us to take this message to heart.
1.According to the passage, people's behaviors on the roads are becoming_____________________.
2.What does the author suggest in order to get control of the situation?
3.Drivers who can manage to control their impulse to revenge when they experience impolite behavior are considered as_________________by the author.
4.Encouraging old ladies to cross the road at the wrong moment is referred as______________by the author.
5.Experts have long pointed out that all road users should be ready to yield to each other due to______________________.
答案:
1.[horrible]
2.[A"Be Kind to Other Drivers"campaign.]
解析:原文中的get out of hand意为“失控”,与题干中的get control of“控制”刚好相反。
3.[the most cool-headed and good-tempered.]
解析:题干中的control their impulse to相当于原文的resist the temptation to,experience impolite behavior也是原文subjected to uncivilized behavior的同义替换。 冲动,空白处需填描述这些司机的形容词或名词(词组),即the most cool-headed and good-tempered。
4.[misplaced politeness]
[定位]根据题干中的encouraging old ladies to cross the road定位到第3段。
原文该段倒数第二句中的The same goes for指的就是这种行为。
5.[the car-ownership explosion]
Years ago the experts warned对应题干中的Experts have long pointed out,而be ready to yield toeach other是原文中demand a lot more give-and-take的同义替换,故原文该句that从句中的主语the car-ownership explosion部分即为答案。
Is it possible to persuade mankind to live without war? War is an ancient institution, which has existed for at least six thousand years. It was always bad and usually foolish, but in the past human race managed to live with it. Modern ingenuity has changed this. Either man will abolish war, or war will abolish man. For the present, it is nuclear weapons that cause the most serious danger, but bacteriological or chemical weapons may, before long, offer an even greater threat. If we succeed in abolishing nuclear weapons, our work will not be done. It will never be done until we have succeeded in abolishing war. To do this, we need to persuade mankind to look upon international questions in a new way, not as contests of force, in which the victory goes to the side which is most skillful in killing people, but by arbitration in accordance with agreed principles of law. It is not easy to change very old mental habits, but this is what must be attempted.
There are those who say that the adoption of this or that ideology would prevent war. I believe this to be a big error. All ideologies are based upon dogmatic statements that are, at best, doubtful, and at worst, totally false. Their adherents believe in them so fanatically that they are willing to go to war in support of them.
The movement of world opinion during the past few years has been very largely such as we can welcome. It has become a commonplace that nuclear war must be avoided. Of course very difficult problems remain in the world, but the spirit in which they are being approached is a better one than it was some years ago. It has begun to be thought, even by the powerful men who decide whether we shall live or die, that negotiations should reach agreements even if both sides do not find these agreements wholly satisfactory. It has begun to be understood that the important conflict nowadays is not between different countries, but between man and the atom bomb.
1. This passage implies that war is now ___.
A. worse than in the past.
B. as bad as in the past
C. not so dangerous as in the past
D. as necessary as in the past
2. In the sentence “To do this, we need to persuade mankind” (Para 1), “this” refers to ___.
A. abolish war
B. improve weapons
C. solve international problems
D. live a peaceful life
3. From Paragraph 2 we learn that the author of the passage ___.
A. is an adherent of some modern ideologies.
B. does not think that adoption of any ideology could prevent war.
C. believe that the adoption of some ideology could prevent war.
D. does not doubt the truth of any ideologies.
4. According to the author, ___.
A. war is the only way to solve international disputes.
B. war will be less dangerous because of the improvement of weapons.
C. it is impossible for the people to live without war.
D. war must be abolished if man wants to survive.
5. The last paragraph suggests that ___.
A. international agreements can be reached more easily now.
B. man begins to realize the danger of nuclear war.
C. nuclear war will definitely not take place.
D. world opinion welcomes nuclear war
